ACT OF PARLIAMENT
An Act for building a Bridge cross the River of Thames from the Town of Fulham in the County of Middlesex, to the Town of Putney in the County of Surrey
London, printed by John Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, And Tho. Norris, Assignee to George Hills. 1726 [2], 643-662pp 32x21, disbound extract Edges browned and slightly chipped, very good thus for fragile item. The Fulham and Putney Bridge Act enabled the construction of the first Putney Bridge (also known as the Fulham Bridge). Rumour had it that the impetus for the Act came from Robert Walpole having been left standing on one bank of the river while the ferryman refused to come of the pub on the opposite bank to take him across. Whether there was truth in this or not, the fact that the bridge was on the route from Westminster to royal residences in Kingston and Richmond probably helped.

ACT OF PARLIAMENT
An Act for enlightening the open Places, Streets, Lanes, Passages, and Courts; and for the better regulating the Nightly Watch, within the Parish of Saint John Southwark in the County of Surry

The Act established the power to charge rates to pay for the various improvements in this parish on the south side of the Thames between London Bridge and the Royal Docks at Deptford, and sets out the reliefs and penalties to be applied to non-payers, as well as setting out the duties of the watchmen and beadles. The preamble notes the various new major roads being built through the parish, as London started to expand on the south side of the river.

ACT OF PARLIAMENT
An Act for Paving, Cleansing, and Lighting, the Squares, Streets, and Lanes, within the City and Liberty of Westmister, the Parishes of Saint Giles in the Fields, Saint George the Martyr, Saint George Bloomsbury, that Part of the Parish of Saint Andrew's Holborn which lies in the County of Middlesex, the several Liberties of the Rolls and Savoy, and that Part of the Dutchy of Lancaster which lies in the County of Middlesex, and for preventing Annoyances therein; and for other Purposes therein mentioned.
London, printed by Mark Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty, and the Assigns of Robert Baskett 1762 [2], 759-776pp 32x21, disbound extract Edges browned and slightly chipped, very good thus for fragile item. The full name of this Act demonstrated the administrative complexities caused by the expansion of the urban area of London into previously semi-rural parishes around Westminster and the various ancient liberties that interspersed them. The Act created Commissioners to carry out the various functions required, and gave them the power to raise rates to pay for them. It also outlined the penalties for the unnecessary obstruction of the highways by parked waggons and carriages.

ACT OF PARLIAMENT
An Act for transferring the Duties of paving, lighting, watering, and cleansing Parts of the Crown Estate in the District of Regent's Park and certain Streets and Places in Westminster from the Commissioners acting under several Acts of Their late Majesties King George the Fourth and King William the Fourth to the Parishes; and for transferring the Jurisdiction of the said Commissioners over certain other Places in Westminster to the Commissioners of Her Majesty's Works and Public Buildings; and for other Purposes. [14 & 15 Vict. CAP. XCV.]
London, printed by George Edward Eyre and William Spottiswoode, Printers to the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty. 1851 [2], 759-776pp 32x21, disbound extract Edges browned and slightly chipped, very good thus for fragile item. Commonly known as the Crown Estate Paving Act, this legislation somewhat rationalised the complex series of private commissioners empowered to raise levies to pay for improvements to streets. The Crown Estate Paving Commission had been established in 1824, and was responsible for improvements on Crown Estate lands from Whitehall to Regents Park, primarily along Regent's Street. This Act removed Regents Street from its remit, but added the Park itself. The CEPC was not included in the municipal reforms of the late 19th century, and still exists and can - and does - levy charges on the 1200 or so buidings that come under its scope.
